SOAT: Colombia's mandatory traffic accident insurance

SOAT (Seguro Obligatorio de Accidentes de Tránsito) is the mandatory traffic accident insurance every vehicle needs to be on the road in Colombia (Ley 769 de 2002). It covers people injured in traffic accidents, not damage to vehicles.

It covers everyone injured in a traffic accident (driver, occupants, passengers and pedestrians): medical expenses, permanent disability, death and funeral expenses, and transportation of victims. It doesn't cover damage to vehicles or other property.

It depends on the vehicle's category, defined by its type, engine size, age and passenger capacity. The Financial Superintendence (Superintendencia Financiera) sets maximum rates every year. We confirm the exact price with your plate, and our advice is free.

Every vehicle on Colombian roads must have SOAT (Ley 769 de 2002), whatever the nationality of its owner or driver. To buy it, we need the plate, the buyer's details and the vehicle registration card (licencia de tránsito).
