The short answer
As a rule, no. Health insurance plans require the pregnancy to begin after the enrollment date or set a maternity waiting period, so an ongoing pregnancy has no delivery coverage. The two exceptions are Allianz and AXA Colpatria, which offer add-ons to cover an ongoing pregnancy for an extra premium.

Your two options if you are already pregnant
Allianz: ongoing-pregnancy maternity add-on
- Applies between weeks 13 and 36 of pregnancy, for single pregnancies and expectant mothers aged 18 to 38.
- Approximate cost according to Allianz’s technical guide: COP 10,500,000 + VAT (weeks 13 to 24) or COP 14,500,000 + VAT (weeks 24 to 36), paid upfront with an annual-payment policy.
- You must join together with another insured person and provide your obstetric medical record and pregnancy tests.
AXA Colpatria: optional maternity assistance
- Covers check-ups and delivery for the pregnancy you have when you join, for an extra premium.
- It is not automatic: AXA reserves the right to grant it after assessing the risk.
- It excludes newborn neonatal care, which is key when planning expenses.
If you are planning a pregnancy
Join before trying. Once the waiting period is over, pregnancy, delivery and newborn coverage (including congenital conditions) are covered with no add-ons or surcharges. The shortest requirement is 60 days (SURA and Allianz) and the longest, 12 months (Bolívar plan L).

Frequently asked questions
Can I get health insurance if I am already pregnant?
Yes, you can join, but in most plans that pregnancy and its delivery will not be covered, because the policy terms require the pregnancy to begin after enrollment or set a waiting period. The exceptions are Allianz and AXA Colpatria, which offer maternity add-ons at an extra cost.
How much does Allianz’s ongoing-pregnancy maternity add-on cost?
According to Allianz’s underwriting technical guide, about COP 10,500,000 plus 5% VAT between weeks 13 and 24 of pregnancy, and COP 14,500,000 plus VAT between weeks 24 and 36. It is paid upfront with the annual policy, applies only to single pregnancies and to expectant mothers aged 18 to 38. Since the document may have been updated, confirm it with an advisor before deciding.
Is my baby covered if born while I am insured?
Yes, if the pregnancy was covered by the policy and you add the baby in time: 30 days after birth at SURA, Seguros Bolívar and AXA Colpatria, and 60 days at Allianz. Note: AXA’s maternity add-on for ongoing pregnancies excludes newborn neonatal care.
How far in advance should I join if I am planning a pregnancy?
At least two to three months before trying at SURA, Bolívar Salud Integral or Allianz, and three months at AXA Colpatria. Bolívar plan L requires 12 months, and for the EPS SURA complementary plan the due date must fall more than 300 days after enrollment.
